John Francis Delina
John Francis Delina is a twelve year old boy from the Philippines who has been diagnosed with severe scoliosis. His spine is curved in a S shape, which will lead to extreme pressure on the lungs, and potential puncturing.
John Francis has had to change schools because of his condition, and has not been able to lead a normal life. He has been told that he cannot participate in sports, and he is also constantly subject to teasing from his peers.
A procedure to cure his condition is very expensive, and his family does not have the means to afford it. John Francis’ grandmother is the main caregiver, but she also has to take care of his brother and 6 other cousins. His mother, Melanie, and aunts are all domestic helpers working in Hong Kong. It was through Melanie’s employer that she learned about FOCOS, a hospital in Ghana, started by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei. Dr. Boachie-Adjei has successfully operated on many patients with similar conditions as John Francis’. The family was filled with hope.
One of Sports 360’s main objectives is to give back to the community. When we heard John Francis’ story, especially his passion and love for the game of basketball, we felt compelled to help turn the family’s hope into reality. Besides funding his travel to Accra, Ghana, we also asked our friends at the NBA to encourage John Francis as he prepares for his journey to recovery. His favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA Cares made John Francis’ day by sending him a box of goodies and a precious jersey signed by the entire team, including his favorite player, Kobe Bryant.
Together with the kindness and generosity of a number of other friends, Sports 360 Limited wishes John Francis a smooth surgery and a quick and complete recovery. All the best to you, John Francis!
